Despite the fact that the numbers of people in the UK who actually believe in a Christian god is rapidly dwindling, our lives are still excessively influenced by the Church and its values. Outdated institutions such as the House of Lords, in which Church representatives still sit, influence the laws we live under. Schools still pedal religious nonsense to children from an age at which they're far too young to be able to objectively question what they're being told. Religion and the state are bound together by the formal institution of the Church of England. In these times of increasing ethnic diversity in society, along with decreasing interest in the teachings of the Church, it is ludicrous that Christianity holds a privileged position in this way. The Church should be disestablished, and the state should stop propping up such beliefs. If they can't survive on their own, and stand up to scrutiny from questioning and independent minds, then let them wither away into the dustbin of history.

Religious morality invades so many aspects of our daily lives - whether by school discipline, social pressure or Government laws. In God we're trussed. It's impossible to escape the crippling effects of Christian dogma when religious bigots hold positions of authority in the state machine. As we enter the 21st Century, surely such superstition is no longer valid. The time has come to finally disentangle church from state.
