We have enough for everyone’s need but not for everyone’s greed. I know that’s an old cliché, but it is also true. Yet we live in a world where meeting everyone’s basic needs doesn’t seem to be a priority for those who have the power to make it happen. Why?
Many people seem to accept that a selfishness and disregard for the well-being of others is an intrinsic part of human nature, and therefore is something which can’t be changed. But is empathy really such an unnatural human feeling? Surely not.
It’s easy to see the big picture, but seemingly much harder to change it. Global economic conferences happen with great regularity, yet billions of people are still living in abject poverty and our planet and its resources are still being ravaged – all while the richest people in the world are allowed (perhaps even encouraged) to become more wealthy and more powerful than ever before. The problems are staring world leaders in the face – when are they going to have the vision and conviction to deal with them?
