about

British parliamentary “democracy” is a stagnant cesspool. Labour and the Tories have conspired throughout the years to ensure that we’re effectively stuck in a two-party system, where only they can form a government. They’ve conspired between them to ensure that any other choice you might want to make can seem like a distraction - under our electoral system, other parties will never have an influence which would reflect their levels of support. They’ve rigged the election so that only they can win - propped up, if necessary, by smaller parties like the Lib Dems, whose relative representation isn’t strong enough to prevent them becoming virtually powerless in any coalition.
What’s more, our electoral system means that the votes of most people don’t really count at all. Realistically, the electors who decide the result are a few thousand “undecided” voters in marginal constituencies - people who, by definition, often have no real political opinions or convictions, and whose allegiances are liable to switch with the slightest of nudges. So politicians spend most of their time tailoring their policies and soundbites to appeal to the ears of these floating voters.
That leaves us all stuck in a game of political ping-pong - bouncing from one bunch to the other and back again. In this election, Labour are trying to convince a public who only recently got rid of them to give them another go. And if they manage to do that, then you can be sure that within a few months the Tories will be back attempting to do just the same - reinvent themselves, no doubt with a new leader, and trying to absolve themselves of any blame for the problems we’re in.
And underlining all of their campaigning, there is little talk of what any of them will change if they get elected - just fear-mongering about what will happen if you don’t vote for them and thereby “let the others in”. Don’t they realise that a huge number of people can’t see any significant difference between these two bunches of clowns anyway? If you continually only chose between what you think is the lesser of two evils then one thing is for sure - you will ALWAYS get evil.
People will be engaged in politics and elections when they have real choices and believe that their votes will matter. But don’t expect people to get excited by the prospect of electing career-minded politicians who simply bob in the tide of opinion polls from focus groups.

lyrics

Voted out of power, they try to re-invent themselves as the party of the future not the past - complaining about the mess we’re in, as if it’s not to do with them. Do they expect us to forget things quite so fast? It’s as if they think that we’ve all had our memories erased. Or is it some of them that’s had that done? Some try to apologise, others just tell downright lies, and some of them are just plain fucking dumb. Like a phoenix from the ashes, they ascend with a new plan with which to make amends. They replace the leader, and then think we won’t recognise them. Slimy, two-faced careerists - don’t you just despise them? They tell us that they’ve learnt from mistakes of the past. Well, why don’t we, the public, do the same? The problems that we’re facing haven’t grown up overnight, and it’s this same bunch of arseholes that’s to blame.
