about

Of all the resources on which modern life has become dependent, oil is by far the most significant and the most fundamental.
It's not just about transportation - oil provides the basis for plastics which are used to make a vast quantity of the goods people use, and oil-based fertilisers are used in the majority of food production. But how sensible is it to be so dependent on a resource which is so scarce?
Given that oil is a super-concentrated energy source which was produced by natural processes over millions of years, there is therefore a finite amount of it in the world. Whilst it is true that we obviously haven’t discovered all the oil deposits that exist yet, it is also true that whatever we do discover and extract depletes the remaining resource.
Since the discovery of oil a century ago, human economic development has erupted at an astonishing pace with the help of this cheap, concentrated energy source. Yet in recent decades, the amount of oil used has far outstripped the amounts of new oil discovered and with the rapid expansion and development of the Asian economies this is a pattern which is only set to continue. It has been estimated that there could be serious shortages of oil within the next decade as demand outstrips supply - unless we can reduce our dependency by finding new, more sustainable replacements for oil and by changing the way we live and use energy.
Do you see a readiness in people to make those changes? No. Instead we get people moaning about the price of petrol, and demanding that "something should be done about it". Like make it cheaper, they mean. So that we can all go on using at wastefully as we’ve become accustomed to, they mean. So that we can drive faster and faster into the dead end that we’re heading down.

lyrics

We’re addicted to oil and all it provides - it dominates the working of all of our lives. An unhealthy addiction to a finite resource - we desperately need to alter our course. What will we do when it’s all been consumed? We must kick the habit, or we may be doomed. We need to start now - there’s no time to lose, or we’ll be going cold turkey with no other way to choose. We’re addicted to oil.
