about
The creation of the European Single Currency (the Euro) was a reckless move by the governments of the countries of Europe - spurred on by big business. It was not something that was demanded by ordinary people. Instead, it was a dream of those who wanted to make it easier to trade across European borders and to profit from that trade.
Such a move was always, by necessity, going to centralise financial decision making in Europe. Independent nations operate independent currencies. Combining the currencies was always going to make the countries less independent, and eventually lead to some countries being forced by the others to toe the economic line so that the common currency that they all relied upon didn’t become unstable.
European leaders always knew this, or at least should have done as it was not in any way unexpected. Sceptics of the whole project had always pointed out this flaw in the beginning. But were the public told that it would inevitably lead to them being less able to influence the economic decisions in their own country - that these would increasingly be dictated to them by those outside? Judging by the riots in Athens over the last few years, it would seem that they weren’t…
lyrics
Monetary union - an idealist’s dream, but not as benign as it seemed. Nobody took the trouble to explain to those who might have to feel the pain. They created a time bomb, and now it’s ready to go off. When centralised financial control is a system’s ultimate goal, the ordinary people don’t have a say as all of their power is taken away. There’s a heavy price to be paid by those who have been so betrayed - in light of this, is it so surprising to see a popular uprising?
