about

The number of children now being prescribed drugs to combat behavioural problems in the UK has reach epidemic proportions. There’s now more than 60,000 children taking drugs for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in the UK – a figure which is a 34-fold increase since the 1995. More than 90% of those drugs are Ritalin. In the USA, more than 10% of children are considered to have ADHD.
Too many doctors are prescribing Ritalin as the first choice “go to” treatment for kids with behavioural difficulties. Common side effects include appetite suppression, which often results in stunted growth, and sleep disruption. Without proper food and sleep, how are kids supposed to concentrate at school or physically develop properly? Other side effects include mood swings, anxiety and even psychosis – in other words, the drugs can induce mental health issues which are even worse than the ADHD they’re supposed to be helping with.
Are prescription drugs really the best way to address behavioural concerns in children? Surely not. In the over-stimulating environment which we create for children these days, it seems hardly surprising that many will struggle to concentrate and remain focussed on tasks. The impact of lifestyle and diet on kids’ behaviour should be obvious, yet doctors are still handing out drugs like sweeties as their preferred way of dealing with problem behaviour – a quick and easy way to try to brush the problem under the carpet.
A huge experiment of mass medication is being conducted on a whole generation of children. How this will affect them in the long-term is unknown, but it seems clear that they’re being let down by adult society.

lyrics

You’d better make way for the Ritalin generation –
Hyperactive kids who’ve had computer games from birth.
Junk food and junk culture are sweeping the nation –
Draining kids brains of all that they’re worth.

What are we doing to our children
To have them on drugs at such a tender age?
Modern life messing with their minds so badly
That we have to place them in a chemical cage.

Everyone’s worried about drugs in the schoolyard,
But the pills from the doctor don’t cause such concern.
Don’t take a look at the lifestyle or diet,
Just fix it with tablets – that’s the lesson to learn.
