about
The criminalisation of prostitution in the UK is a law purporting to be on moral grounds but that has an immoral outcome. It puts already vulnerable women at greater risk and marginalises them so that they often feel unable to access proper heathcare and other support, or to report rape or assault.
This may seem like a radical position to take for some, but it is the view put forward by the Royal College of Nursing - hardly a fringe revolutionary group. The fact is that making criminals of those who sell sex has not, and will not, put an end to prostitution. Those who do it, particularly those who work on the streets, are often those who’ve got some serious personal problems or drug habits. They need help, but when the law regards what you do as unacceptable then their rights seem to be able to be disregarded.
Prostitutes working on the streets are putting themselves in an environment in which the danger of being physically attacked is very real, yet the illegal nature of what they do means that they must do it furtively and try to stay out of sight. This makes their situation even more dangerous. Society as a whole seems to regard everyone working in prostitution as lowlife who have no rights. When we read about some crazed maniac on a killing spree targeting prostitutes, do we ever wonder if his murderous contempt and disregard has developed from the background culture of intolerance that he’s grown up in?
lyrics
Our moralistic society criminalises those who sell sexual services for money, and condemns them all to hell. With no protection of the law their lives are put at risk. The dangers will increase the more we deny that they exist. It’s somebody’s daughter - somebody’s wife - somebody’s mother. It’s somebody’s life. Someone in trouble who needs some protection - nothing can justify our total rejection of somebody’s daughter. Is it really too much to ask for these women to expect that the law’s predominant task is the duty to protect? The situations that they’re in will often make them fear the worst. So don’t fret that it’s a “sin” - we should put their safety first. Another killer on the loose again - targeting prostitutes at night. Something inside his warped brain makes him think he has the right. Where did he get the thought that they’d no right to be there, and that they were the sort about whom nobody would care?
