about

Regardless of the progress that has been made in equality legislation in recent years, some people's attitudes towards others who don’t fit into a heterosexual norm still lag far behind.
I’m sure we’ve all heard it - at work, in pubs, in schools - the taunting language that makes it clear that gays and lesbians are seen as legitimate targets for ridicule. That ridicule leads to many people hiding their sexuality from those around them, and leading lives of misery and self-loathing.
That ridicule, in the wrong hands, also turns to hatred and violence. A report by Stonewall in 2008 on Homophobic Hate Crime shows just how commonplace it still is for people to experience intimidation and violence because of their sexuality - violence that can result in murder. Hate crimes, whether motivated by race or sexuality, is usually perpetrated by complete strangers - people who take such an instant dislike to somebody that they are prepared to commit violence against them - just because of who they are.
These warped ideas begin when people are young and impressionable - in the home, through the attitudes of parents and siblings, and in the schoolyard, where bullying frequently goes unchecked. Underlining the bigotry is the idea that only heterosexuality is "natural".
But what is "natural" anyway? Surely it’s natural to seek and give affection to others. Sexual stimulation is a natural urge. What exactly is it that is unnatural? The gender of someone’s sexual partner? Is that really so big a deal? Why should we have our circle of acquaintances split in two from the outset - between those we’re allowed to love sexually, and those who can only ever be friends? None of us should want to live with such strict rules about what’s allowed to happen in our private lives.

lyrics

This is your life, planned out for you from birth to death, through work and school. Who can be friends, and who you can love - they try to fit you like a hand in glove. Your sexuality has been decided by those who want to keep us all divided, and anyone who doesn’t want to fit must get used to being treated like shit. They want you to fit into a straight jacket. Some people try to tie you tight with their ideas of what’s morally right. Deviation is silenced with a gag - alienated with labels like “queer” and “fag”. The oppressive atmosphere that they create through insults at work leads to crimes of hate. But it’s time to make a stand and say that we don’t have to look at life in only one way. We don’t have to fit into a straight jacket.
