about

It’s shocking to think of some of the things that children in our society live with these days. I’m not talking about children living through civil wars in Africa or the Middle East – I’m talking about kids living here, who are becoming exposed to a violent and exploitative world at ever younger ages.
Children enter the online world so early on that they have little experience to ground them in the real world. And that online world is one that frequently encourages bullying and normalises violence. Gang culture is easily glamorised amongst kids who’ve grown up with violent video games and who have few positive role models or opportunities to make something of their lives.
Kids are exposed to explicit sexual imagery long before they have the maturity to properly contextualise it. This creates such an all-pervasive online culture that large numbers of teenagers are now sending pornographic pictures of themselves by text, with seemingly little concept of who could end up seeing those in an online world in which images hang around forever. And this behaviour is spreading to pre-teens as well.
These vulnerable kids are being thrust into a cynical world of manipulative and devious adults, who exploit this vulnerability and naivety for their own ends. It’s heart-breaking.

lyrics

There’s kids out there who carry knives –
Who deal in drugs, and threaten lives.
There’s kids out there who ride with gangs –
Exploited by men with sinister plans.

Where have all the children gone?
Forced to grow up far too soon.
What the fuck have we done?

There’s kids out there playing games –
Sadistic murder amongst their aims.
There’s kids out there who are nervous wrecks,
Who’ve been blackmailed into online sex.

There’s kids out there who’ve been witness to
Things that would horrify me and you.
Nightmare visions fill their thoughts –
Their innocence stolen and their childhood cut short.
