Society is becoming more and more self-obsessed. Our consumerist culture tries to tell us that everyone deserves every material desire that companies want to sell us. Advertising now shamelessly targets children, and gets them to want and expect material possessions long before they can possibly understand the economic realities which their own families have to deal with.
In an economy which is built on so much instantly available credit, people are urged to spend now and think later. Whole generations are growing up with this, as if it’s a new system of social values. Personal debt is so ingrained in modern culture that it becomes odd to even question the need for it.
Debt-driven consumerism is enslaving everyone in a rat-race which is literally making us ill with stress. There’s no time to step back and think about the plight of others when there’s things to buy and bills to pay. We can’t go on like this.

Today’s generation expect so much - we’re told that we can have it all, as if we’ve got the Midas Touch - learn to spend before we can crawl. Today’s generation are apathetic - self-interest is the philosophy of the times. Modern life has shaped those values. Consumerism pollutes our minds.
