about
The scale of sexual abuse committed by Catholic priests across the whole world should be a sign to all those involved in the Catholic Church that there is something fundamentally wrong with their religion. This isn’t about a few “rotten apples” or a handful of malfunctioning dioceses. This is mass child abuse on an epidemic level, which has been allowed to continue for so long through systematic cover-ups by the most senior officials of the church.
Whilst the scale of the abuse is shocking, in some ways it’s not surprising for a church which encourages children to confess their “sins” of masturbation and “impure thoughts” to celibate men in private, who then decide on the appropriate punishment. The role of the priest in this situation sounds like a job description ideally suited to paedophiles.
It’s estimated that around 5% of Catholic priests have molested children who were supposedly in their care. When the abuse has been reported by victims, rather than the perpetrators being prosecuted or even just dismissed, the abusive behaviour has actually been spread further through the Church’s practice of relocating perpetrators to other parishes where they are free to re-offend. The reputation of the Church and its clergy has routinely been prioritised over the safety of children.
Whilst the abuse is known to have been prevalent amongst the Church for many decades, it is only in the last thirty years or so that the truth has started to emerge. Since the accusations began to be made public in the late 1980’s, what was first a trickle turned into a steady stream and then a deluge – particularly in the USA, Ireland and Australia. In 2017 the Vatican, having belatedly woken up to the scale of abuse and the role of the Church hierarchy in perpetuating it, reported that they had a backlog of more than 2,000 cases to deal with.
Yet, unless some of the fundamental tenets upon which the Church is founded are changed, then the abuse is likely to continue. The Catholic obsession with sexual behaviour, confession, and penance for “sinful” actions seems perverse in itself. It will take more than words for the Church to cleanse itself of the sins of its own recent past.
lyrics
“Forgive me Father, for I have sinned.”
“Tell me more, my son.”
A “celibate” man, an innocent youth –
An incendiary situation.
The word of the Father must be obeyed,
And those around turn a blind eye.
So many victims have been betrayed –
Isn’t it time to find out why?
And the word of the Father must be obeyed.
In the name of the Father they are betrayed.
The word of the Father.
Such is the scale of this exploitation
That it inevitably leads to the conclusion
That this abuse must be institutional
In a hierarchy that’s entirely dysfunctional.

The Minneapolis band add a horn section, a running surrealist allegory about walls, and an occasional nod to the elegiac to their electroshocked post-punk. Bandcamp Album of the Day Mar 4, 2024
