about
It’s too easy to become jaded and cynical as we get older. Back in the 80’s the scene was full of people with the energy and idealism of youth, who thought that together we could change the world. But, over time, that often mutated into a world-weary cynicism towards the idea that any change can be brought about at all.
Yes, the world is still a fucked-up place in so many ways. But many things have also changed for the better quite significantly. The acceptance of different sexual preferences has become mainstream in many parts of the world. Meat-free diets are no longer considered a fringe issue. The threat of climate change has helped to create a whole generation of younger people who question consumerism far more than their parents ever did.
The world is quite a different place to the one I grew up with in the 80’s, and social attitudes are very different too. If this has sometimes created new problems which need to be addressed, then let’s move on to deal with those. We’re not trying to live in the past, but to help create a future for ourselves and for generations to come – just as we always have been.
lyrics
Where once there was anger and idealism
This has too often been replaced
By a nihilistic cynicism
Towards the human race.
Yes, I’m talking about my generation.
I hope I get old before I die.
I refuse to believe that we’re all doomed –
I want to still work for change.
I don’t care if it’s now uncool
To have ideals and aims.
So let’s live each day like it is the start
Of the rest of a fulfilling life.
Because, even though the shit’s piled high,
I’m not ready to give up the fight.
