about

The UK has had nuclear weapons now for 60 years. The cost of buying and maintaining that nuclear capability is many billions of pounds - money which could be far better spent on providing adequate food, housing, clothing and education for those who desperately need it.
All the British governments which have been elected during those 60 years have justified the retention of nuclear weapons by saying that they were vital to keep the country safe. Taking that argument to its logical conclusion would seem to imply that we should arm all the countries in the world with nuclear weapons, to maintain global peace. Yet in 1968 the UK ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty - an international agreement which states that the spread of nuclear weapons needs to be prevented in order to keep the world safer.
So does the existence of nuclear weapons make the world more or less safe? If our own governments constantly defend their support for a nuclear deterrent, then is it any surprise that other countries will seek to follow suit and have their own nuclear weapons? After all, they’ll only be using exactly the same arguments to their populations that have been used in the UK for decades - that a nuclear deterrent will help to protect them.
If we really want to convincingly argue that weapons of mass destruction are wrong, then we need to practice what we preach.

lyrics

Our governments are hypocrites (now there’s a surprise). The evidence is obvious, and right in front of your eyes. They say weapons of mass destruction make other countries a threat, but when it comes to their own stockpiles they seem to simply forget. How can we make a case that these weapons are wrong, when our own countries have had them for so very long? A fortune has been squandered on these weapons of war. They prefer to threaten others than to feed the world’s poor. Well, if they’re looking for support for this policy they won’t get it from me. It’s time to rid the whole world of WMD.
