about
Let’s be clear about this - the overwhelming weight of scientific opinion supports the view that the climate is being affected by human activity - in particular the use of fossil fuels. Whilst it might be currently fashionable to be sceptical about the opinions of experts, does it really make any sense to fail to act on such a huge problem just because a handful of discredited mavericks are arguing for something else?
We now have climate sceptics in the White House, and this is not good news. The idea that the world’s most powerful economy may undermine global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions should concern us all.
The most puzzling aspect of climate scepticism, is the belief held by some that climate change is a “conspiracy theory”. Who do they think is conspiring, and why? Who would it benefit? In whose interest is the theory being advanced? When you consider that the scientists who cast doubt on climate change science are almost all in the pay of the oil industry, then surely it is they who are likely to be shaping their conclusions to suit the vested interests of their paymasters. The idea that governments have dreamed this up in order to tax people clearly ignores the fact that they have spend those taxes addressing the problem itself. Few people like paying taxes, so it seems far-fetched to imagine that a government would invent a problem whose solution would make them more unpopular.
The reality is that it is in nobody’s interest for climate change to be true. It requires massive changes in the ways that people live and businesses work, and those changes do not come cheap. Yet just because facts are things we’d rather not hear, that doesn’t mean they’re not still facts. You can’t just wish them away. Climate scepticism is such a fringe opinion that it shouldn’t be taken seriously by any responsible government. To do so would be a massive gamble with the future of the planet that we all need to live on. At one time there may have been a legitimate debate, but that debate has been over for a long time.

Healthy scepticism, or wishful thinking, or just people covering their ears? Can we afford to take them seriously? We don’t have the luxury of time. Are they really questioning the science, or just refusing to change?
