Those who are most wealthy are those who are most greedy –
Such greed can’t be accommodated by the Earth that we live on.
We’d need three worlds to supply our demands to all the population.
Has it escaped your notice that we only have the one?
No – this is not the voice of envy,
It’s the voice of outrage at the injustice of it all.
Western aspirations must be drastically reined in
So that resources are not squandered, and so that there’s enough for all.
Let us not repeat the mistakes of an unsustainable past,
Where empires, once so dominant, were always set to fall.

34 Hours

The bosses of the FTSE 100
Take just 34 hours to earn
The annual wage of the average worker –
A grotesquely unfair return.
34 hours –
Just 34 hours.
This vast disparity between top bosses
And workers just keeps on growing.
It’s multiplied sixfold since the 1980’s –
Can’t you see where society’s going?

Nothing Sticks To DuPont

Scientists, who are so clever,
Make chemicals that last forever,
And society has such reliance
On these miracles of modern science.
But would you think they were so good
If you’d known that they’d got in your blood -
If you’d known we’ve all been poisoned?
DuPont knew all along
Of the danger when they made Teflon.
But even when their workers began to die,
And when they knew they’d polluted the water supply,
The company used its dirty tricks
To make sure no dirt ever sticks -
Even though they’d all been poisoned.
These chemicals have been detected
In almost everyone that they’ve inspected –
Even those who live half a world away
From the factories where they are made.
How many of the cancers that we see
Were caused by this reckless company
Because we’ve all been poisoned?

There are things that seem so obvious, but apparently they’re not –
Otherwise we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in.
There are things that seem so fucking dumb, but people keep on doing them.
When it’s so fucked up, where do we begin?
We seem to think the world’s an everlasting toy shop
That we can just keep taking from without ever running low.
We act like kids who’ve been spoiled since the day that we were born –
With nobody ever there to tell us “no” –
No-one to show.
There are things that seem so obvious, but apparently they’re not.
When people act they don’t consider consequences.
There are things that seem so fucking dumb, but people keep on doing them.
When will we finally be brought to our senses?
When cheap consumer goods, and second homes, and holidays
Are more important than other peoples’ lives;
When all perspective has been lost, and we fail to see the cost –
The starving children that our selfishness deprive.
Can they survive?
There are things that seem so obvious, but apparently they’re not –
That’s why we live in a world that’s ruled by greed,
Where some think that their strength and might means that they have the right
To rob others of their basic human needs.
And when the kids ask you why it has to be so,
Do you find it hard to know quite what to say?
Can you explain why, when we have the power to change it,
We simply choose to let the world stay this way?
Let’s change today.

When a child lives with abuse,
And constantly told that they’re no use –
If they’re just belittled and criticised
Then this lack of worth is internalised.
And when they have children of their own
They’ll raise them in the only way that they’ve known.
When all a child knows is violence
They quickly learn to hold their silence.
They’ll be vulnerable to exploitation
If they mistake love for domination.
All children must grow up one day
And these patterns they’ve learned make them easy prey.
When a child lives with neglect
It’s all that they learn to expect –
That no one ever wants them there
And, if they disappeared, no one would care.
If their truth is never spoken
Then how can this cycle be broken?

Reaping What You Sow

There’s no use in getting fraught
When the system you support,
Through market-efficient evolution
Leads to the logical conclusion –
Where the desires of giant companies
Will decimate communities
As they relocate to the cheapest place
For them to use as their new base.
Tax-dodging, outsourcing – that’s how capitalism works.
Cutting costs by cutting corners – that’s how capitalism works.
Social needs are inconsequential – that’s how capitalism works.
Only the bottom line is fundamental, because that is how it works.

For The Dreamers
04:02
|
|
||
Time flies – it moves so fast,
And so many good times have long since passed.
You always think there’ll be another day,
But sometimes life gets in the way.
Do you find that you reminisce –
Or wonder how it has come to this?
Where has the fire of your young heart gone –
The one who was ready to take the whole world on?
There’s still time to reignite those feelings.
There’s still time to let your spirits fly.
This one goes out to all the dreamers –
All the true believers.
This one’s for you.
And for those who are still following their passions
And not the fleeting fashions –
We salute you too.
This one’s for you.
Do you find that the light has faded,
And that your thoughts have become jaded?
There was a time when you were fearless –
When your commitment was completely peerless.
The hopes and dreams from when you were young –
The inspiration of the songs you sung –
They’re still there deep down inside,
Waiting for a time to be reapplied.
Now’s the time to reignite those feelings.
Now’s the time to let your spirits fly.
