It's a sad fact that many of the people that I've known in the past, and who I felt I shared common views and goals with, have now moved onto pastures new. So often they've turned into what they used to claim they detested - conventional, consumerist, and apolitical. But have they actually changed? The desire to fit in and conform with your peers is a strong one, and any 'alternative' culture attracts hangers-on in exactly the same way as mainstream culture. Perhaps the problem is that any attempt at creating an alternative culture tends to be just as intolerant of people being different as the mainstream that it's supposed to be kicking against. We shouldn't be afraid of being challenged in our thinking, and we shouldn't be afraid of challenging others either - including our friends and those who we respect for their commitment. Contribute, and be yourself. If others don't accept you for that, then they're probably not worth spending time with.

You utter all the right words in the right company - it seems you know just what to say. You wear fashionable opinions like others wear clothes - it's a sycophant's role that you play. Nobody can figure out what you really think or if you have anything real to express, but I think that I have sussed out the truth and that is that you couldn't really care less.
