about

Religious cults hoover up lost and broken souls and brainwash them. They can achieve this so totally that the most outlandish or outrageous ideas become normalised.
The Westboro Baptist Church was established over 60 years ago by a bunch of fanatics in the USA under the leadership of pastor Fred Phelps. Children born into the Church are taught the most rampant homophobia from an early age and are taken onto picket lines to hold up signs reading “God Hates Fags” outside funerals. Their young and innocent minds are poisoned with bitterness and hatred. If their parents were looking at things rationally they’d probably see this as a form of child abuse, but they don’t. Their obedience to the Church leaders and their twisted logic seems so unquestioning that they don’t consider the psychological damage inflicted on their own kids. And they seem to revel in their notoriety – even their website is called godhatesfags.com. What the fuck is wrong with these people?
The Heaven’s Gate cult were another bunch lost souls, desperately looking for someone to provide an answer to the mysteries of life – no matter how bizarre. Holed up in a large house in San Diego, and following the ramblings of their leader Marshall Applewhite (who believed he was directly related to Jesus), their beliefs were a confusing muddle of Christianity, New Age mysticism and ufology. They were told that they would ascend to heaven upon death by being carried aboard some kind of spacecraft. In March 1997, with the approach of the Hale-Bopp Comet, 39 members of the cult, including Applewhite, committed suicide together. They took barbiturates and then tied plastic bags around their heads to die by asphyxiation. Each wore an arm-band which read “Heaven’s Gate away Team”.
What can possibly drive people to follow unhinged lunatics like Phelps and Applewhite – to immerse themselves in such warped, insular thinking that they are happy to use their children as mouthpieces for bigotry or to literally sacrifice their lives in pursuit of a nonsensical belief? These self-styled prophets have taken vulnerable people and destroyed them. What a waste of people’s lives.

lyrics

Have you seen those loonies from the Westboro Baptist Church?
You know the ones – the “God Hates Fags” brigade?
Brainwashing their kids to become fundamentalist morons,
And what a good job of it they’ve made.

What motivates them to follow
Self-styled prophets talking shit?
Were their lives really so hollow
That this would make more sense of it?

Did you hear about the Heaven’s Gate cult
Who believed they were not of the human race?
They killed themselves when they saw a comet
So that they could hitch a ride to outer space.
