about
We may have escaped the crippling poverty experienced by the poorest people in the world, but that has often just created different problems for people here. Whilst conventional economic measurements may seem to show that our standard of living is growing, Western lifestyles are increasingly accompanied by mental health problems. Figures given by the WHO in 2016 had Europe with a higher rate of suicide than any other region of the world.
Western materialistic lifestyles are stressful. In the UK, high property prices mean that two full time workers are often needed to keep up mortgage repayments which would previously have been covered by a single wage. Many jobs these days are precarious - offering no long-term stability. Is it any wonder that people struggle to cope mentally? New technologies used to give people more free time – now they seem to be designed to eat it away. And all the time we’re surrounded by images of the hugely rich and famous, with lavish lifestyles that we’re supposed to aspire to.
Governments fail to recognise that the well-being of people should be a fundamental aim of society. Instead, they measure narrow economic indicators as signs of their success, when clear signs of the failure of the economy to provide stability and contentment are staring them in the face.
lyrics
The higher the standard of living - the higher the suicide rates.
The higher the standard of living - the higher the levels of stress.
That might seem quite ironic, but ever increasing material wealth
Will not make us happier or stop our lives from being a mess.
Like a hamster on a wheel,
Or a dog chasing it’s tail –
We’re trying to reach an impossible goal,
And we will fail.

Dead Cross, Retox, and Qui members dish out subversive hardcore with an indignant smirk; come for the riffs, stay for the synth experiments. Bandcamp New & Notable Mar 31, 2024
