Who is the old woman who sits in the street
Trying to sell bits of junk just to make her ends meet?
Who is the old woman who sits under the trees
Trying to make some sense of the world that she sees?
It’s a very different place to the one where she grew up.
The world around her has changed so much –
She’s out of sight and she’s out of touch.
Who is the old man on the road by the woods
Trying to raise some cash from his pitiful goods?
Who is the old man sitting all alone,
With a table offering a handful of food that he’s grown?
It’s a very different place to the one where he grew up.
He’s not equipped for these new ways –
Condemned to poverty in his final days.
Do you remember the old woman? Now where has she gone –
The one who couldn’t keep up when the world had moved on?
Do you remember the old man who once sat in this place?
Has anyone missed him since he’s gone without trace?
It’s a very different place to the one where they grew up,
And the new world is not so kind
To the ones who are left behind.

The reality of global economics
Is that some will go without,
And we are amongst the fortunate ones –
You shouldn’t have any doubt.
Far away from the tabloid pages
People are forced to live in squalor –
Living each day from hand to mouth,
Not daring to think of tomorrow.
Out there, it’s another peasant valley slum day
Back in exploitation land.
We don’t leave enough to make their ends meet.
When will we start to understand?
If we want to make to make poverty history
We must tackle the excesses of greed,
Where a minority have stockpiles of wealth
Far greater than anyone could need.
Meanwhile, it’s another peasant valley slum day
Back in exploitation land.
We don’t leave enough to make their ends meet.
When will we start to understand?

The higher the standard of living - the higher the suicide rates.
The higher the standard of living - the higher the levels of stress.
That might seem quite ironic, but ever increasing material wealth
Will not make us happier or stop our lives from being a mess.
Like a hamster on a wheel,
Or a dog chasing it’s tail –
We’re trying to reach an impossible goal,
And we will fail.

Extreme poverty.
Extreme wealth.
You figure it out.

One In A Million

What makes them feel that they’re one in a million –
That they deserve to have more than the million most poor?
National wealth inequality is an obscenity.
We’re too keen to indulge those who want more and more.
What makes them think that they’re one in a billion,
And that the world’s poorest deserve so much less?
Global wealth inequality is an obscenity.
Will we ever learn to get out of this mess?

Where once there was anger and idealism
This has too often been replaced
By a nihilistic cynicism
Towards the human race.
Yes, I’m talking about my generation.
I hope I get old before I die.
I refuse to believe that we’re all doomed –
I want to still work for change.
I don’t care if it’s now uncool
To have ideals and aims.
So let’s live each day like it is the start
Of the rest of a fulfilling life.
Because, even though the shit’s piled high,
I’m not ready to give up the fight.
