about

We’re increasingly socialising in bubbles – insulating us from those who may challenge what we think, and acting as a reinforcement mechanism for those viewpoints which dominate our own social groups. An increase in online bullying and trolling in recent years has led to many people being nervous about expressing opinions which don’t conform to those of their immediate social circles.
This is not a healthy situation. We need our opinions to be questioned in a meaningful way, to ensure they stand up to proper scrutiny. Theories formed in social “petri dishes”, cut off from the influence of the rest of society, are not likely on their own to provide any solutions to the problems we all face.
Tribal social and political thinking doesn’t move us forwards. You may identify more with a certain group of people and their political opinions, but that doesn’t mean that everything they say is right – nor that everything said by those you tend to rail against is necessarily wrong, or that they don’t raise valid points which need to be addressed.
If we’re not careful, our society will become one in which a handful of aggressive loudmouths will ostracise and intimidate anybody who dares to suggest that they might be wrong – effectively silencing any meaningful discussion. This is already becoming a worrying trend in universities – institutions which should be at the forefront of challenging ideas. It’s healthy to have opinions, but also healthy to have a mind which is open enough to accept that your opinions may be wrong or need to change.

lyrics

I have a theory - it belongs to me,
And it doesn't matter if you don't agree.

What do you have to say?
What do you have to give?
What part do you want to play?
How do you want to live?

I have a philosophy and it is mine -
Who I try to be, it helps to define.

Don't be intimidated by other people's jeers.
We all need to develop our own ideas.
