Loud-mouthed bullies tend to dominate whatever conversations they’re involved in. Others are often intimidated into staying silent, so bullshit opinions and prejudices don’t get challenged and become an accepted norm in the social group.
Society has changed much in the last few decades. We have generally become more tolerant and diverse as a culture – in music, sport and drama everybody has become accustomed to cheering on others who don’t come from the same backgrounds as us or have the same lifestyles or opinions on everything.
But this diversity always risks provoking a backlash from unreconstructed bigots who see their previous cultural dominance undermined. If we run away from confronting these bigoted opinions, then they can take hold. Before you know it, a loud-mouthed bigoted idiot could even become president of the most powerful nation on Earth…
